Lamisil Over the counter (OTC) is a topical cream that works on superficial fungal infections - like athlete's foot! You will most likely need a systemic oral antifungal agent, like Lamisil (terbinafine) or Sporonox (itraconazole). Ask you doctor!

Is there a way to get rid of a nasty toe nail infection without going to the doctor?
Sorry...IF the infection is in the matrix of the toenail (other than superficial on the skin) and it is fungal, you will need oral medication and a prescription from a doctor. The diagnosis is Onychomycosis! Topical medications do NOT work.
Two common oral medications for fungal infections of the finger nail and toe nail:
1. Lamisil (terbinafine) is available as an oral medication. http://www.lamisil.com
The dose is 250mg once daily for 12 weeks for toe nail fungal infections
2. Sporanox (itraconazole) is usually taken two twice a day for one week each month, for three or four cycles http://www.sporanox.com
Lamisil is one possible solution. The generic for lamisil is Clotramizol and it may be cheaper for you to go that route since it is the generic.
There is a product called Bag Balm, and I am completely serious. Bag Balm is manufactured by Dairy Association Co. in Lydonville, VT. Originally it was produced to keep cows udders from chapping and now it's used/sold everywhere. This product has never steered me wrong when it comes to infections, especially ingrown toenails and insect bites. No smell, does not contain alcohol and contains a lanolin petrolium base which sucks out infection and keeps the area moist.
It depends on the cause of the infection: If it's a fungal nail, it is a cosmetic problem that needs to be treated with oral medication such as Lamisil. This drug can cause liver problems so you'll need to have blood drawn often. Topical creams do not work, so save your money. If you have a bacterial infection, you'll may need some antibiotics. Sometimes we have to drill through the nail to adequately treat it. If you have an ingrown nail, which can be very painful, you can soak it in warm water throughout the day and take NSAIDS (such as advil, motrin, or aleve). You may not have to see a doc if it improves and you learn how to clip the nail. But sometimes, patients wait too long to see us and we have to remove the nail. You should see your healthcare provider before your infection worsens.
